If you ever get this error during a restore in central administration:
Error: Object WSS_Content failed in event OnPostRestore. For more information, see the error log located in the backup directory.
SqlException: The transaction log for database ‘WSS_Content’ is full. To find out why space in the log cannot be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases
Then you won’t be able to restore the backup you made. But there’s a solution.
First let’s look at the problem. When I got this error I noticed that the transaction log had a max size restriction and guess what, it reached its max.
When restoring a backup MOSS fails in the OnPostRestore event. Truncating the transaction log and then doing restore won’t help you because the transaction log is restored together with all its settings.
If you open SQL Management Studio and right click on the DB that causes the problem the got to tasks->back up and look at the destination in the bottom of the screen. There you’ll see where SharePoint has put you latest backup. Now restore that DB in SQL Management Studio. When the restore is finished truncate the transaction log or make sure it’s allow to grow bigger. Move or rename the .bak file you used to restore. Then go to tasks->back up and make a backup. The filename should be an 8 digit number with the BAK extension.
We now replaced our BAK file with the full transaction log with one that has a non full transaction log. If we go to central administration and try to restore out backup just like we did before everything should complete without warnings or errors.
